Sentinel-5 Precursor now on CREODIAS
Sentinel-5 Precursor – also known as Sentinel-5P – is the first Copernicus mission dedicated to monitoring Earth’s atmosphere. It will play a key role in monitoring and tracking air pollution, with the help of its state-of-the-art Tropomi instrument that map a multitude of trace gases such as nitrogen dioxide, ozone, formaldehyde, sulphur dioxide, methane, carbon monoxide and aerosols – all of which affect the air we breathe in.
“Poor air quality continues to affect and claim the lives of millions of people each year, thus it is vital that we have an accurate method of monitoring what exactly we breathe in” – explains Maciej Krzyzanowski, CEO of CloudFerro. “Thanks to its Tropomi instrument, with Sentinel-5P we can zoom in to the Earth’s surface and gain highly detailed, as well as the most accurate data concerning our atmosphere. As of 9th of August 2018, Sentinel-5P data are now available to CREODIAS users”.
Sentinel-5P is the forerunner of Sentinel-5 to provide timely data on a multitude of trace gases and aerosols affecting air quality and climate. It has been developed to reduce data gaps between the Envisat satellite – in particular the Sciamachy instrument – and the launch of Sentinel-5. Sentinel-5P was taken into orbit on a Rockot launcher from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in northern Russia on 13 October 2017.
