Air pollution dashboards

Air pollution affects human health

Air pollution is one of the biggest global challenges across the world. It not only aggravates the climate change process but also leads to serious health issues such as lung cancer, heart disease, stroke, etc.  According to WHO, more than 60% of the people living in urban regions are severely exposed to air pollution.

Major causes of air pollution are directly linked with anthropogenic activities such as the burning of fossil fuels, industrial emissions, transportation, and construction activities. Thus, during COVID-19 lockdown phases due to less commute traffic, reduced movement of goods as well as construction activities, and industrial emission across Europe a reduction in air pollution could be expected.

Sentinel-5 air quality monitoring

Together with its partner Urbetho CF, CloudFerro offers dashboards to visualise air pollution index in dynamic maps and tables. The dashboards are based on an innovative technology delivered by EOF- Studio.

The presented dashboard displays air pollution indicators for Germany before and during mandatory COVID-19 lockdown phases. NO2 pollution and an Absorbing Aerosol Index are retrieved using the Copernicus Sentinel-5 satellite dataset for the year 2019 to 2020 to monitor the pre-COVID lockdown period. For lockdown scenario monitoring, the same Copernicus data are analyzed for the year 2020 to 2021.
